Last night Amanda, Elizabeth, Heidi and I gathered in my dining room for what we call The Greatest Party of the Year.  That’s right my friends it was indeed the Fancy Schmancy Hat Making Party!

These hats will be worn by all the fabulous people, who bought get schmancy tickets, at our Fancy Schmancy Benefit in two weeks.

What you haven’t bought your tickets yet?  Just click here!

At two o’clock the dining room was prepped with ruffles, birds, fruit and glue guns.

The hats sat like blank canvases on my sofa.

I wondered if we could do these hats justice…

Auditions

Auditions are nerve-wracking. Just sitting at the table outside auditions last night made me nervous. You dread sneaking a peek at the auditioners to see something like this . . .

Or maybe this . . .

But I promise the people in the room are really nice people who want you to do well! They look more like this . . .

Auditions started last night—the first auditions we’ve had in a couple of years—and a ton of interesting, talented people came out. We have two more nights of that to go. As the audition notice makes clear, we’re always looking to fill specific gaps in our company, which means you can be the awesomest awesome that ever awesomed and not be cast. AHHHH!!!!! Infuriating!!!!! But we appreciate every single person who takes the time to come out. Some of you are going to be Monkeys, and that thrills us!

As I twittered, new monkeys wait to be born. The galaxy prepares.

BOM ‘treats itself

I was looking at my calendar last week, somewhat amazed, and ever so slightly saddened that summer is on its last legs.  What can get me out of my funk, I wonder?
Ah yes, something that marks the final weeks of summer but also gets me pumped for the new school year—the Barrel of Monkeys retreat!

Every year, BOM goes on a retreat to Delavan, WI to spend a full day (and overnight) talking about the upcoming year.  We learn new skills and techniques, talk about the state of our company, eat lots of food sold in bulk (see Luke’s TWG entry), play the Battle of the Monkeys Stars, where we engage in fierce competition (or fierce by our standards!), play heartfelt get to know you games, and sleep in bunk beds.  Oh and then we have breakfast at Millie’s Pancake House. It’s not just a pancake house, people.  It’s a way of life.  It’s also a banquet facility. And shopping village.

I always come back from the retreat a little tired, a little dirty, and slightly injured from sort of event in the Battle of the Monkey Stars.  It’s the best!
Mostly I return excited to start doing the work we do.  Our in-school residencies begin in a few short weeks, we have new rounds of TWG to look forward to, and pretty soon we’ll be rehearsing brand new stories for our in-school performances.  The retreat is a chance for us to get together as a company to prepare for all the exciting work ahead.  It’s also a chance for us to learn from each other.  Each year company members are responsible for leading workshops, and bring their own skills to share with the rest of us.

I feel the retreat can best be described through the art of digital photography. Ahem. Slide, please.

One of the first items of business is gathering in front of the dining hall for a brief orientation of the space.  Luke welcomes us all:

Workshop leaders Laura and Rachel get serious about the learning that is about to commence:

Tai is excited by the snacks from Costco.  Jason looks skeptical.

While Tai doesn’t seem as excited about the folders I made as he was about the snacks, he is.  Those folders had stickers on them for cryin’ out loud!

While the red team won the Monkey Battle, Erick, Joe and Brandon show that, win or lose, whatever team you are on, we all look really foxy in our shirts.  Even though Brandon is doing an impression of a tiger, not a fox.  But you get it.

I can’t wait for next year!

How’s goes it? The Big B is finally blogging. Had great fun at the retreat. Always cool to chat with friends and get to know others better. So sad I had to leave early; but looking forward to meeting Amanda after TWG tomorrow. Talks to ya….

That’s Weird Grandma - Monday 8/10/09

General That's Weird Grandma

There are many reasons to come see That’s Weird, Grandma this week (a great cast and great stories, “all thriller, no filler” as we like to say), but I will focus on two reasons, in particular - the two new stories.

The first is Disco Girl from last year’s poetry show. I highly recommend reading it as it is quite enjoyable and so that you are familiar with all the nuances ahead of time.

Now, the second piece we are adding this week is something of a classic.
It has been performed in TWG before and is also on our CD Monkeys Come Alive
It is called “Friends” and it just might be the original “new piece with words and movement”. It is accompanied by a My First Sony sfx machine.

You have been warned.

See you there!

Full running order and story links after the jump.
