...I’m delighted to let you know that we have hired our first ever Company Manager. This part-time position will replace and expand the “Finance and Development Assistant” role ably held by the delightful Geoff Rice, who after two years of balancing the books and helping write grants leaves the office to focus on his more familiar role as monkey performer, teacher, and mentor.

We’re thrilled to announce that our Stage Manager, Maggie Fullilove-Nugent, will increase her monkey commitments by taking on this job.

In addition to Maggie, we’ve also hired long-time monkey Sarah Goeden as the new After School Program Coordinator. For some reason we don’t seem to have a hilarious photo of her in a silly hat, so here she is on the far right of the second row in this group shot from 2004.

More about all of these delightful developments after the jump.

Maggie started stage managing for us in 2005, was officially made a company member in 2006, and has spent the last couple of years basically making herself indispensable in every way. Maggie just loves to manage people, plays and companies, so to make sure she has enough on her plate she is also the Production Manager for The Hypocrites and North Park University Theatre. As a freelance lighting designer and technician, Maggie has worked on over 50 productions in the past few years in Chicago and with several amazing companies including 500 Clown, The House, The Building Stage, Lifeline and The Artistic Home. As Company Manager she will help with virtually every facet of the organization, from scheduling school show rehearsals to bookkeeping, prop wrangling and more. Those of us on the full-time staff can not wait to have her around for her smarts, charm, and practical good sense.

Meanwhile, Sarah Geoden will work on developing our Loyola Park after school program, our general after school curriculum, and on creating a model for our planned expansion south in 2010. Sarah has taught with BOM for 8 years, and last year was a lead teacher for both in-school and after school programs. She has taught creative writing, acting, and improvisation for five years with After School Matters and has been teaching theater movement and circus arts for the last four years at The Actors Gymnasium. In the Chicagoland area, she has also taught with The Vittum Theatre, Children’s Home and Aid, the CAST program in Oak Park, and the Youth Arts Program in Evanston. She also has spent 7 summers teaching theatre at youth theatre-conservatory programs, to 8 through 18-year-old students from diverse economic and social backgrounds. We are really excited to have her take over running the Loyola Park program and look forward to expanding it every year.

In case you didn’t recognize her in the group shot above, here’s a super serious photo of Sarah:

On a personal note, I have to say that sharing an office with Luke, Elizabeth, and Maggie will be joyful experience. I can’t imagine a more even-keeled, insightful, intelligent and generally delightful group. I look forward to lots of fascinating conversations, reasoned debates, and general smooth sailing as we move into BOM’s second decade. I’m also thrilled to have Sarah, Elizabeth and all the amazing teaching artists on board to help deepen the impact of our educational programming on the Chicago community; their work in the schools is the core of what we do, and I am grateful for their dedication.

As many of our most devoted friends know, a little over a year ago BOM co-founder and Artistic Director Halena Kays announced that she was taking a sabbatical for the 2007-2008 program year while she pursued other opportunities. In the interim we hired the amazing Laura Grey to serve as Artistic Director. For the last year Laura has directed “That’s Weird, Grandma” and most of our school shows, provided exemplary artistic leadership and direction, and generally lived up to our very high expectations of her skills and abilities. During her sabbatical Halena decided that BOM was in good hands, and she was free to go to graduate school and dream up new amazing things.

Meanwhile, Laura is so dang talented that The Second City hired her to write and perform with them. For the last six months or so Laura has been doing the equivalent of holding two full time jobs, and she’s continued to meet and exceed our artistic hopes and dreams. Sadly though, she can’t continue this balancing act and will be stepping down as Artistic Director at the end of August. While this is sad for me in the office, it may be a delight for you the dedicated monkey fan as we will regain her as a performer in our school shows and the occasional run of TWG.

I am extremely pleased to announce that we have hired Luke Hatton as our new Artistic Director.

As you can see, he’s pretty serious about the job.

I can not say enough how much we as an organization owe to Halena and Laura. We could go on for pages about Halena’s dedication and skill in establishing the company, and her tireless efforts to get BOM up and running and ready to be pushed out of the nest. I’m hoping that some of you will take a moment to express your appreciation in the comments to this post.

I was lucky enough to share an office with Halena for two years, and as the first non-ensemble member employee of BOM, I owe a lot to Halena’s strength of vision and clarity of expression in getting me up to speed with the organization’s past, present, and goals for the future. It also goes without saying (at least for those of you who have seen her work) that Halena is an immensely talented theater artist. Her performance and directing work are respected throughout Chicago and her talent level has a lot to do with why BOM has been able to thrive.

It has also been a real joy for me personally to get to work with Laura this year, and I have infinite respect for her prodigious talent and can’t wait to see her back on the monkey stage. It was no easy task for her to have to step into Halena’s shoes, and we learned a lot about the company and the role of the Artistic Director. To Laura’s immense credit, this did not feel like a transition year, and we were able to continue to serve our mission uninterrupted. In addition to the daily responsibilities of managing the company and directing most of the shows, Laura helped focus our goals for the future as we developed a new strategic plan, instituted new policies, and in general maintained the artistic excellence we’ve all come to expect.

Clearly, Laura and Halena will be missed (though, as I said, Laura will remain in Chicago and work with us as her schedule permits). It speaks to the depth of the ensemble that they created, however, that we were able to hire Luke.

Luke has been with Barrel of Monkeys since shortly after graduating from Northwestern in 2000. In that time he has held almost every possible role in the organization (including performer, director, teacher, finance administrator...) and has always been a dependable, talented, and invested company member.

A graduate of the Steppenwolf School, Luke also has extensive performance and directing experience outside of Barrel of Monkeys. He’s performed with Steppenwolf, The Neo-Futurists, The Hypocrites, The Gift, Lifeline, and with Geva Theatre Center in New York and as an arts educator, Luke has developed and taught curriculum with After School Matters and Adventure Stage Chicago. He is highly respected by all who have worked with him, and we are hugely confident in his ability to lead BOM into our second decade.

In the coming weeks we will also hire a new part-time Company Manager to replace the incomparable Geoff Rice, whose expanding family and artistic responsibilities mean he will have to stick to “merely” being one of our most dedicated performers and teachers. We will thus begin our second decade with a largely new staff, but with a consistent mission and strong infrastructure for the future, which is a testament to the hard work and skill of the people who founded this company.

We will have a small celebration following the September 1st performance of “That’s Weird, Grandma” in Laura’s honor. Luke’s first day is September 2nd, and I hope you will join me in welcoming him to the staff.

That’s right. He studied them. At puppet school.

Matt led an amazing puppetry workshop for the entire company at the retreat this year.

First, we used pipe cleaner puppets on our hands to practice puppet speech, and Matt showed us how to place our voices to create distinct characters. Then he split us into groups, each with a limited smattering of puppet props and gave us stories to adapt—stories with challenging imagery or highly emotional content that might be difficult to approach in our usual style. Within a very limited time, each group came up with an amazing adaptation. Thanks to the props, each piece had a strong tone and aesthetic all its own.

Here, Kurt works out how to turn a piece of rope into a constantly-shifting landscape, while coat-hanger birds teach Tai how to fly.

Here, Brennan plays a poor guy named Carl who’s trying to save a forest from being cut down. Our group had to use green string, a collection of mops, and some red and white paper plates. You don’t want to know what happens to the beautiful tree line when the mops get their hands on a pair of scissors . . .

Part of the inspiration for this workshop comes from the moving adaptation of “The Crying Woman” that Oona created last year for the Cleveland School show directed by Matt. She used flat pieces of colored paper that come together to build shapes against a horizon line. That story’s been rocking Grandma for the last few weeks, and I can’t wait to see what Matt’s workshop inspires at school shows in the coming year!

Heidi Thompson Saunders first heard the call of the jungle in 2005.

Barrel of Monkeys, the not-for-profit education and theater company, was looking for an executive director.

Thompson Saunders was familiar with the troupe’s popular Monday night show, “That’s Weird, Grandma,” composed of skits performed by grown-up Chicago actors and culled from material created during six-week writing sessions with at-risk children in Chicago public schools.

While Thompson Saunders knew she could get a job paying four or five times more than the Monkeys were, the call was too hard to resist.

Last weekend the BOM company spent some quality time in Wisconsin at our annual retreat. It was a truly delightful weekend full of puppets, four square, and the annual BATTLE OF THE MONKEY STARS (among many other valuable and bonding activities).

Because we spent the weekend learning new skills, debating new ideas, and bonding with each other, we did not change any of the stories in tonight’s show, and thus the running order remains the same (and is detailed after the jump).

Here’s some proof that we were working hard…

...but also had some fun:

Barrel of Monkeys’ annual Fancy Schmancy Benefit will be Friday, October 17th at the Chicago Cultural Center

(event details are here)

In my biased opinion it’s the most fun you can have at a benefit: there will be a performance, some teaching activities, games, a live auction, silent auction, and many more surprises.

We also rely on it to provide more than one-tenth of our annual revenue. So please help support our work by attending! Besides, when else will you have the chance to wear a bridesmaid dress, or your fanciest hat, or that bedazzled t-shirt, or a powder blue tuxedo jacket, or all of the above? Fancy AND schmancy. (Don’t worry, if you attire intimidates you, we can help: there’s a special ticket price for those who’d like us to make them schmancy. And, of course, as “every idea is a good idea” regular work attire is perfectly acceptable).

Three things that I love about my job, today:

1. Dixie (our outgoing Program Director) has been training Elizabeth (our new Program Director) in the ways of the BOM office and her new job. That means Dixie has, among other things, been going over who’s who in our partner networks. Often this sounds like “At the Parks, we work with ____. She loves us. Well, everyone loves us, but she loves us most” and “at CISC our newest friend is ____, but if you can’t get her on the phone, you can talk to ____ --it’s not really her job, but she would do anything for us and our program.”

2. We got a letter in the mail from Senator Obama’s senate office congratulating us on our grant from the NEA. It is surely a form letter, but it is delightful to hear that our work is “a source of pride, and a wellspring of hope for the people of Illinois.”

3. In sorting through files on my desk I found the following quote from a student at the Bridge School: ““You were totally awesome, terrific, fabulous, fantastic, exciting and funny!… and that was totally the best school day in my whole big giant life. Thanks, that really made me really happy.”
and from the author of “Dear Raheel” (currently being performed in “That’s Weird, Grandma"): “My whole class misses you, you gave us the courage to write and imagine what we can do.”

First, I just realized that I never posted about last Monday’s running order. So sorry! There were two new stories: The Funny Man and Fartacine.

Second, sadly we will not have a matinee this next Tuesday. The first two were big hits, this one was, it seems, a harder sell.

Third, I am proud to announce that next year we will have a whole lot more matinee performances than ever before! It’s a long time off, but mark your calenders anyway. In April and May of 2009 we will have Sunday matinee performances -8 of them! - at a kid friendly time. We will of course have a lot more to say about this in the future.

I hope your summers are going well, things are quiet with the monkeys as we gear up for another exciting school year.

Kellogg School of Management is conducting a study of how and why people participate in the arts. We believe the results of this study will help organizations like BOM understand their audiences better.

If you have 15 minutes to take a survey for the arts, please click here

If you are skeptical, I’ve included more information below. Also, everyone who takes the survey has a chance to win $100 in PlayMoney (that’s 10 performances of TWG!!!)

More information after the jump!

I am writing to ask you to participate in an important study of arts and leisure activity in the US. The study, which is being conducted through Northwestern’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management and funded by Boeing and a national arts organization called Leveraging Investments in Creativity ("LINC"), takes a new approach to studying how and why people participate in the arts. If successful, this research promises to help arts organizations understand and serve their audiences better.

Your answers and identity will be kept separate and used only to create an aggregate picture of participation and engagement in theater and other activities. Your answers, though part of a group, are essential to the program’s success. It is a big study, and we need as large a group of thoughtful participants as we can muster. Please help us make this a successful effort.

The survey generally takes just 15-20 minutes of people’s time, and gives you an unique chance to share your opinions and experiences with the people who really care about the arts. I hope that you will find it as interesting and thought-provoking as the test groups who helped us develop this survey.

As an incentive for participating, we will enter any participant who wishes in a chance to win a $100 Play Money package, which can be used to buy tickets to nearly 75 theaters in the Chicago land area. If you win, you can use the Play Money yourself or give it to a friend who you’d like to join you at the theater more often. It’s up to you.

To participate in this study, simply click the hyperlink below and answer all of the questions in the survey. Upon completion, you will be able to enter to win the Play Money packages.

Thanks for your time and support of this important effort. Please click here to take the survey:
